Is Steel Pony Safe?

We service our vehicles frequently and perform a mandatory service check before each shift. Our drivers are well trained and given clear guidelines for appropriate riding behavior.

How long does each tour last for?

Both walking and bike taxi tours last 90 minutes

Who takes the tour?

Friendly, responsible drivers with a passion for telling others the history of Wellington!
 

Where does the tour go?

We start from just outside the entrance to Te Papa. We travel to over 20 separate destinations: pools, statues, buildings, wharves, relics -many places where fascinating historical events took place. We finish at Queen's Wharf.

How many people can fit on a bike tour?

The maximum number of adults allowed on the bike is three. Two adults and two children can also fit comfortably, there is no limit for walking tours.

What happens on the walking tour?

Your tour guide will explain how it works when you arrive. They will escort you around the easy walking route with with their stories enhanced by co-ordinated images presented on an e-ink pad. At the halfway point, we pause for a restroom break.

 

Currently Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Walking tours are at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., with bike taxi tours at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. When you make a booking, you can choose a time that suits you.

What happens in bad weather?

We want you to experience Steel Pony in the best conditions, so any days with winds over 45kph or rain over 3mm will be cancelled. If you want to check the status of your tour, just head to our Weather section here,  which displays up to the date cancellation info.

My booking is cancelled, now what?

You have two options; a free voucher to rebook another time or a full refund. You will be sent an email outlining the process around this.

How do I book more children/ adults than the booking options allow?

Our bike taxi can fit three adults or two adults and two children comfortably. We have a family discount available for two adults and two children- one of the children goes for free! If you wish to book this option please choose 2 Adults and 1 Child from the menu and we will able to accommodate the extra child when you show up. For any other configurations or a group booking please give us a call or email (here) and we can provide a quote. 

What will I learn about?

The Wahine disaster, Kumutoto Pa, Murphy the rat catcher, Paddy the wandering dog, Kupe, Sam Parnell and the 40-hour working week, treasure hunts in the harbour, Wellington Free Ambulance, prison escapes from Sommes/Matiu island, NZ's first swimming baths, and of course the infamous wind!.. among other things.

Family Discount?

We have a family discount available for two adults and two children- one of the children goes for free! If you wish to book this option please choose 2 Adults and 1 Child from the booking options when you purchase a ticket and we will be able to accommodate the extra child when you show up for your tour.

The bike tour goes to more places, and includes Oriental Bay. Like the walking tour, it contains e-ink images while journeying through the waterfront.
